LPG outboard engines have become a strong marine propulsion alternative in protected lakes and rivers, as well as in fish farms.
Two-stroke, gasoline engines are the predominant form of propulsion. Without effective after-treatment systems, the exhaust fumes are very polluting, especially due to the unburnt fuel from the exhaust, not to mention also the spillages encountered when refuelling. These have detrimental effect on the water and aquatic wildlife.
Emission benefits stand as the primary driver behind the use of LPG-fueled engines but there are also noteworthy cost benefits.
The restrictions on the use of internal combustion engines on many protected areas leave LPG fueled outboard engines as the prime alternative for boat users.
LPG Outboard engines are conventional in every sense apart from a ‘plug in’ fuel supply. They are easy to operate and sound like any petrol outboard engine.
They need to be light whilst delivering a high power output. The engines are available in different power ratings and in single and twin cylinder units.
The engine is equipped with components similar to those used in an automotive conversion:
Some models offer ‘twist ‘n go’ fuel canisters that are simple to fit and remove and which can be used along with a separated piped supply from a larger tank.
Tank or cabinet installations done according to standards in combination with type-approved components provide a high level of safety.
LPG outboard engines offer the available power of internal combustion engines without the environmental detriment of gasoline, whilst delivering extended engine life and reduced cost of operation.
Even in the more modern (multi-point) injection engines, the advantages are still significant, as there is usually no exhaust after-treatment: Emissions will be less polluting due to heavier hydrocarbons (i. e. polycyclic aromatics) not present in the LPG exhaust gas. Particulate emissions that turn into methyl mercury in the water are virtually eliminated.
